Description
Purple vermilion clay belongs to the red clay category of Yixing Zisha, a special variant of vermilion clay split into Huanglongshan and Xiaomeiyao types by origin.
Mined from lower strata of Huanglongshan and Xiaomeiyao ore beds, raw ore appears purplish lumps. After firing, it turns warm purplish-red with fine smooth grains and rich color layers.
It features high viscosity and low sand content with great plasticity yet tricky hand forming, while firing is simple with a higher finished product rate than regular vermilion clay.
Its shrinkage rate stands at 8.5%-9%, with firing temperature between 1130-1140°C. High iron content creates subtle vitrification, lending a metallic sheen to teapots with near ceramic fracture texture and slightly weaker air permeability than standard purple clay.
Crafting with purple vermilion clay demands skilled artisans due to its strong stickiness during shaping to guarantee intact, high-quality works.
Teapots made of this clay boast steady elegant shapes with smooth balanced lines, combining the air permeability of purple clay and delicate texture of vermilion clay for noble graceful charm.
This clay excels at locking in tea fragrance, perfectly suited for light and medium fermented teas like oolong and black tea. It delivers soft smooth tea soup with lasting sweet aftertaste.
